1895: John Edgar Hoover is born in Washington, D.C.,
subsequently rising to rule the Federal Bureau of Investigation as his personal
fiefdom and America's thought police from 1924 until his death in 1972. Despite
his legendary hatred of all things liberal, "radical," and nonwhite,
rumors continue circulating that he was actually African American, or at the
very least "mulatto."
