On This Day in Weird, December 1...
1887: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional "private
consulting detective" Sherlock Holmes appears in print for the first time,
subsequently outliving his creator and taking on a literary life of his own,
including multiple clashes with Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, the Phantom of
the Opera, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, rampaging Martian invaders, and London's
elusive real-life Jack the Ripper.
