HUMAN-FACED BIRD

A creature with this description was captured in Guangdong, China, in 1893.  I discovered this in Richard Muirhead's periodical Flying Snake Volume 1, Issue 3.

Apparently, locals were all for killing this bird because of its outlandish appearance, but someone captured it and saved it.  It seemed to have taken to domestication.

What kind of creature was it?  A bird with a vestigial beak or even a nose-like beak?  Unless somebody can manage time travel, I fear it will remain a mystery.

Flying Snake can be ordered from Flying Snake Press, 113 High Street, Macclesfield, SK11 7QQ, UK.  The cost is roughly $4.20 per issue in American currency.
