WERE-PANTHER: A FLORIDA LEGEND

Just how old this tradition may be, bearing in mind it involves motorized vehicular traffic, I am not sure.

The roadway called Alligator Alley crosses the Florida peninsula.  The Were-Panther (as it is called - but there seems to be no reason to think it has changed from man into panther) is said to make its depredations here.  It will only attack moving vehicles such as trucks.  The creature's paws seem to bear some resemblance to hands.  Its eyes are red.

If there is any truth behind this story, author John Henry Fleming suggests it might be an animal with peculiarities developed from inbreeding among a small population of cougars.  He also offers other explanations.  Whatever it is, it is a thing of mystery.
