Some of the ideas listed in this blog relay on the existence of parallel universes. While the notion of parallel universes may seem like the stuff of science fiction, several scientific ways have been suggested in which they might exist. If there were portals between such universes, it might account for phenomena which might seem to exist on a part-time basis. For a look at these suggestions from the scientific community, follow the link.

BIGFOOT PLAITING
A number of accounts I have come across relate to people finding the manes of their horses plaited and have ascribed this to Bigfoot. However, in Europe similar plaiting was widely ascribed to otherworldly beings such as Wights and Elves.
In fact, the origin of such plaiting can be explained without having recourse to any of these beings. It is caused by a disorder called Polish plait. This disorder (Latin Plica polonica) is caused by damage to the outer cuticles of the air, allowing the cortices of the strands to intertwine.
Why was it called Polish plait? The Germans thought for some reason it was associated with the River Vistula in Poland and so called it Weichselzopf (Vistula plait). However, it later became clear it was not necessarily of Polish origin. In English hair plaited in this way is called "elflocks" showing how it was supposedly connected with otherworldly beings.

1973: The "Enfield Horror" begins in White County,
Illinois, as witness Henry McDaniel of Enfield reports a bizarre monster scratched
on his door overnight. According to McDaniel, "It had three legs on it, as
short body, two little short arms coming out of its breast area and two pink
eyes as big as flashlights. It stood four and a half to five feet tall and was
grayish-colored. It was trying to get into the house." Sheriff Roy Poshard
Jr. initially threatens to jail McDaniel for spreading tall tales, then relents
as further sightings of the creature persist through early May. State troopers
find tracks on one occasion, describing them as "like those of a dog,
except they had six toe pads." After its spate of frightening appearance,
the "horror" vanished forever.

WERE-PANTHER: A FLORIDA LEGEND
Just how old this tradition may be, bearing in mind it involves motorized vehicular traffic, I am not sure.
The roadway called Alligator Alley crosses the Florida peninsula. The Were-Panther (as it is called - but there seems to be no reason to think it has changed from man into panther) is said to make its depredations here. It will only attack moving vehicles such as trucks. The creature's paws seem to bear some resemblance to hands. Its eyes are red.
If there is any truth behind this story, author John Henry Fleming suggests it might be an animal with peculiarities developed from inbreeding among a small population of cougars. He also offers other explanations. Whatever it is, it is a thing of mystery.
