1907: British Columbia's Vancouver Province newspaper reports that First Nations tribesmen are frightened of a large, hairy "monkey" seen digging clams and howling by night around Bishop's Cove. Officers of the steamship Capilano claim the natives have fled their village in terror, after failing in attempts to shoot the creature.
