MYSTERY OF THE RED CAT

Here's a little mystery from English folklore.  There must have been a Red Cat of singular notoreity or legend in the north of England.  He is commemorated in sculpture and place-names, but what he did to earn fame we do not know, for the folklore about him has died unrecorded.

The Red Cat has been sculpted as a capital in the chapel at Brimstage Hall.  This was built in 1376.  There is a Red Cat pub in Crank and there was another in the village of Brimstage itself, but it was destroyed before World War II.  There is a Red Cat Lane in Burscough and a Red Cat Hill in Harrogate.  The story of this Red Cat is, however, lost in the mists of time.

However, to keep the name at least in circulation, a modern Red Cat Inn has been built in Greasby.
