ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, January 13...

2007: The so-called "Cambodian jungle girl"—in fact an adult human female—emerges from the jungle of Ratanakiri Province, in northeastern Cambodia. A family from a nearby village claims the woman is their daughter Rochom P'ngieng, born in 1979 and missing from home since approximately 1989. Police schedule DNA testing, but the family withdraws consent. For reasons unclear, news media report the incident as discovery of a feral child. Spokesmen for the Cambodian League for the Promotion and Defense of Human Rights suggest the woman "is a victim of some kind of torture, maybe sexual or physical."
