NEPALESE TREE BEAR

While the Himalayan black bear is a well-known and established species (I have seen some), there is also said to be a smaller species of ursid occupying the same region.  This, the Nepalese Tree Bear, is locally called sano reech.  It is not impossible that these are merely young Himalayan black bears.  The locals, however, are quite sure they are not.  There was a living specimen in Kathmandu Zoo.

The above photograph is of an Asiatic black bear, of which the Nepalese Tree Bear is said to look like a smaller version.
