WELL DONE, MOLE VOLE

Professor Bryan Sykes, geneticist and savant, has produced some alarming news.  In the Human Race the Y-chromosome is defective and becoming more so.  This means that men will cease to be produced,  as in about 125,000 years the Y chromosome in humans is destined to disappear altogether.  As there will be no more male humans left, there will be no more human children.  The  human race will die out.

But hold!  Let us turn our attention to a curious little creature in the Near East.  It is the transcaucasian mole vole (Eliobus lutescans).  This creature has, in the males, not a single Y-chromosome.  But they are still males.  They seem to have by-passed the need for Y-chromosomes.  If we can find out how they do this, the Human Race may yet be saved.  Whether such a thing will be good for the planet is a different question.

I fear that I have been unable to find a photograph or artistic depiction of a mole vole.  If anyone has one to send in, we would be grateful to receive it.
