ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, October 11...

1492: The night before his "discovery" of the "New World," Christopher Columbus and a crewman aboard the Santa Maria record "a light glimmering in the distance," vanishing and reappearing several times, moving up and down "in sudden and passing gleams." Some regard it as the Western Hemisphere's first UFO sighting. A bad omen for aboriginals in any case, as the next day offers their first taste of genocide.

1957: U.S. theatrical premiere of The Black Scorpion, featuring stop-motion effects by master animator Willis O'Brien.
