ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, May 9...

1671: Anglo-Irish officer and self-styled "colonel" Thomas Blood attempts to steal the English Crown Jewels from the Tower of London, dressed as a parson and accompanied by a woman posing as his wife. Captured while fleeing the scene, Blood pleads his own case in court. To the disgust of prosecutors, King Charles II not only pardons Blood, but also grants him land in Ireland worth £500 per year. Sometimes, crime does pay!
