ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, May 21...

2011: American evangelist Harold Egbert Camping, president of Family Radio, predicts the return of Jesus on this date, drawing 3 percent of Earth's population to Heaven for "the Rapture," followed by five months of tribulations, destroying the planet completely on October 21. When Jesus fails to arrive on schedule, Camping changes his story, saying that a "Spiritual Judgment" occurred on May 21, setting the stage for a simultaneous Rapture and end of the world on October 21. A stroke on October 16 spares Camping from further public humiliation, as relatives announce his retirement from the ministry.
