ON THIS DAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, May 19...

1780: Members of the Connecticut General Assembly declare a sudden darkening of the sky to be a sign of the biblical "end times." In fact, the cause is a combination of cloud cover and smoke from an approaching forest fire. Earth endures.

1998: Television premiere of Gargantua, in which Polynesian islanders capture a baby sea monster, prompting Mama to appear and wreak havoc to liberate her offspring. A thinly disguised pastiche of Gorgo (1961), shifted from Britain to the Pacific.
