TODAY IN WEIRD

On This Day in Weird, February 7...

1958: Fishermen report a 20-foot giant squid floating off Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.

1979: Auschwitz "Angel of Death" Josef Mengele—nearly a human cryptid himself, considering his long life in hiding and multiple false reports of his extinction—drowns while swimming with friends at a Brazilian coastal resort. Or did he?

2001: Newspapers report a "near perfect specimen" of giant squid, weighing 440 pounds, caught by commercial fishermen off the southwestern coast of Australia.
