On This Day in Weird, January 12...

1915: The U.S. House of Representatives rejects women's suffrage.

1950: Witnesses report a UFO over the Gulf of Mexico, southwest of Florida. In Washington, D.C., the Air Force Directorate of Intelligence issues memos canceling prior intelligence collection directives for UFO sightings.

1951:  U.S. Army 2nd Lieutenant A. C. Hale sights a "fan-shaped" light hovering over Fort Benning, Georgia.

1965: A federal employee driving toward Blaine Air Force Base, in Washington State, nearly collides with a low-flying UFO, while a farmer with property nearby reports snow melt from a "saucer" landing. A Border Patrol agent sees a bright disc illuminating the ground near Lynden, Washington. Across the country, two NASA employees watch a bright yellow UFO maneuver over Wallops Island, Virginia.

1965: Musician, film director, and screenwriter Rob Zombie born Robert Bartleh Cummings, in Massachusetts.

1966: Batman, starring Adam West and Burt Ward, premieres on ABC TV.

1975: George O'Barski sees eight to ten humanoid figures, 3½ feet tall, wearing helmets and dark clothing, emerge from a hovering disc with lighted windows, apparently taking soil samples.

1980: Near Huayana, in Bolivia's Potosi Valley, a witness reportedly watches a UFO project a beam of light that forms a "dome," which he then enters, meeting a tall, blond humanoid with slanted eyes who makes him feel serene and loved.

1983: Three witnesses in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, allegedly encounter a humanoid figure clutching an "L-shaped" object of indeterminate purpose.

1989: Two witnesses watch a silent, diamond-shaped UFO circling for five minutes over Belleville, Illinois.

1990: A man and his three daughters, driving on a rural road near Indianapolis, Indiana, see a "circle of lights" to their left, stopping in the driveway of an abandoned farm to watch the grounded UFO's flashing lights for three to five minutes.

1995: O. J. Simpson's bizarre double-murder trial begins in Los Angeles. To Catch a Yeti premieres nationwide.

2001: A trawler fishing 34 miles offshore from Gijón, Spain, nets an immature female giant squid, alive and intact but for two missing arms.

2006: On the last day of the Hajj in Mina, Saudi Arabia, a stampede occurs during the ritual of ramy al-jamarat ("Stoning the Devil"), killing at least 346 pilgrims (some accounts say 362) and injuring at least 289 more.
