Here's an old incident, which supposedly took place in 1891. Two ladies in a buggy observed a strange creature. It boasted wings, a head with a beak and clawed feet. W.R. Benedict, writing in the Fortean Times, suggested it was a griffin.

A large water-dwelling tortoise in the traditions of the Zulu. It is said to be found in the River Umtshezi. It is supposed to devour humans.
